The Punjab Tourism Recognitions (PTR) is a prestigious initiative designed to honour businesses and organizations that have made significant contributions to the tourism industry in Punjab. The PTR aims to recognize excellence in business performance, sustainability practices, and innovative approaches that have positively impacted the state’s tourism sector.

PTR Philosophy

The Punjab Tourism Recognitions (PTR) is guided by the following core principles:

TOURISM INDUSTRY

The Tourism Industry has done a great service by designing enriching experiences for the travellers. The Industry is expected to gallop as the COVID Pandemic weakens. The earlier projections of 1.8 Cr Arrivals for 2021 may get surpassed as almost two years of Lockdown will nudge a lot more people to plan vacations. As per the Pre-COVID estimates, by 2021, Domestic Arrivals would touch 1.62 Crs. Similarly, the Foreign Arrivals is expected to reach 18 Lacs. The aforesaid numbers give a clear indication that new capacities will be required to serve the Post-COVID arrivals. Further, the Traveler will be looking for new and richer experience like Digital Detox, Adventure Sports, etc.

Punjab is a blessed land for Tourism. It has an array of curated experiences to cater to the palate of all traveller segments. It has world famous pilgrimages, historical places, natural features, wetlands and a whole lot of interesting places. This has enabled Punjab to be destination of choice for tourists.
The Tourism Industry of Punjab creates a lot of direct and indirect jobs in the economy. The three major areas of employment generation are Travel, Hospitality, Food and Entertainment. Further growth of Tourism Sector creates opportunities for employment with a decent payout even in the remote locations of the state; this in turn will help youth to find well-paying jobs locally and discourage them to migrate out of the state and country.

THE SUSTAINABILITY CONCERNS

The rise in Tourism poses sustainability challenges for the state. The Tourism Destinations face large scale depletion of Natural Resources for building capacities for accommodation and transportation. The limited resources have to be shared between the local inhabitants and the tourists who cause a lot of stress on Water, Energy and Spaces. The cultural impact is even greater as the means of livelihood undergoes a sea change owing to the arrival of tourists. The Gender Prerogatives are redefined as women get integrated into the supply chain. A mixed bag of changes, some desirable and others not so desirable happen and the behavior of the people is greatly impacted.

SUSTAINABLE & RESPONSIBLE TOURISM

The historic agreement among world leaders at the United Nations in 2015 on a universal 2030 Agenda for sustainable Development committed all countries to pursue a set of 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) that would lead to a better future for all. The bold agenda sets out a global framework to end extreme poverty, fight inequality and injustice, and fix climate change until 2030. As the 17 SDGs and the corresponding 169 SDG targets offer the world a new direction, tourism can and must play a significant role in delivering sustainable solutions for people, the planet, prosperity and peace. Tourism as an economic powerhouse is the third highest world category in export earnings in 2015, representing 10% of world GDP, 30% of services exports and 1 out of every 10 jobs in the world.

Tourism has the potential to contribute, directly or indirectly to all of the goals. In particular, it has been included as targets in Goals 8, 12 and 14 on inclusive and sustainable economic growth, Sustainable Consumption and Production (SCP) and the sustainable use of oceans and marine resources, respectively. (UNWTO, 2018) The Integration of Tourism and Sustainable Practices is the need of the hour. Tourism Solutions have to strike a balance between the commercial considerations and the preservation of the assets for future generations. The Need of the hour is to identify and encourage Tourism Practices that establish Punjab as the Destination of choice for Travellers and at the same time encourage sustainable behaviour for all stakeholders. The Punjab Tourism Recognitions is an initiative by PHD Chamber of Commerce and Industry (PHDCCI) to achieve the aforementioned objectives.

The Jury based on their Evaluation of the Nomination Forms, will accord the following Recognitions:

1- PTR 2024– SUSTAINABILITY CHAMPION

This category recognizes an individual or organization that has made a significant and lasting contribution to sustainable tourism in Punjab. The winner will be selected by Hon’ble Jury members based on all the Submissions made under the Sustainability Categories. The Best and Most Impactful Initiative will be conferred this Recognition.

2- PTR 2024 – TRAILBLAZER OF THE YEAR

The Tourism Organization that has shown break-out achievement in Customer Service, Innovative Offerings, Exemplary Vision for growing both Quality and Value will be accorded this Recognition. The Jury will be according this Recognition based on all the Entries submitted for Evaluation at PTR 2024.

3- PTR 2024 – DESTINATION OF THE YEAR

Punjab is blessed with very important destinations that can be showcased for Tourism. These need to be identified and highlighted to both Travellers and Policy Makers. The Hon’ble Jury Members Will Accord this Recognition to a Destination that has the potential for growth for hosting Tourism.
